How to Double Crochet

Here it is now put in very simple directions, which is always the way I write. First of all you need to be familiar with "single stitch crocheting" and how to make a chain stitch

A double is the first of the long stitches used in crochet. It makes more open fabric than a single crochet and produces a lattice effect when used with fine yarns.

In filet, crochet blocks of doubles are worked to form motifs over an open lattice background, and doubles can be used with single crochet and half-doubles to make shaped motifs such as shells.

Materials you'll Need:

Crocheting Needle (my favorite is a #7)
Yarn, medium thickness
Nimble fingers : )

Let's Get Started
How to Double Crochet

1. Make any number of chain stitches, and make two more than the number of stitches (such as, you will need 32 stitches for a 30 chains. Wind the yarn around the hook. Insert the hook from the front to back into the 4th chain from the hook.

2. Wrap yarn around the hook once (this is called a "yarn over") and draw through a loop. You should have 3 loops on the hook now.

Double Crochet step 3

3. Wind the yarn around the hook and draw it through the first two loops on the hook. Two loops remain on the hook.

Double Crochet step 4

4. Wind the yarn around the hook and draw it through the last two loops on the hook. One double has been made.

Double Crochet step 5

5.Work one double in the same way into each chain to the end of the row. Your work will start to look like this.

Doublecrochet step 6

6. Now you are ready to turn it around and double crochet the next row. To turn the row make 3 chain stitches. The three chains count as the turning stitch and are equal in height to one double crochet stitch. Skip the first stitch. Work the first double into the second stitch.

Double Crochet step 7

7. Work into each double to end, working the last double into the top of the turning chain of the previous row.

8. Continue to work in this way for the number of rows you need. Fasten off. Now your work should look like this.

Note: Since the double crochet is a much longer stitch than a single crochet, it is necessary to work three turning chains at the beginning of every row.

Work the last stitch of every row into the top of the three turning chain of the previous row to keep the edge straight, and to prevent pulling the work out of shape at the side edge.
